What I've worked with for most of my life |
PC's |
| At elementary school, we may have had Apple II's (don't remember that well). Used them rarely until this semester when I began using the G5's for Graphic Design. |
|
|
Macintosh |
| Never used them much, I know they have a battery, can get hot, and run mostly the same as Desktop PCs |
|
|
Laptops |
| Never used one |
|
|
Tablet PCs |
| |
|
I know to Defragment them. I've set Master and Slave jumpers and partitioned one when I was messing with dual-boot linux, but I've never set up a RAID. |
Hard Drives |
| |
I can put the cable on the back and screw them in, but if they fail, I can only try another driver or update the firmware (if available). I know that DVD drives and ASPI drivers are somehow related. |
|
CD/DVD Drives |
| |
put it in the slot (generally PCI nowadays), install the drivers, configure it. |
|
Sound Cards |
| |
Put it in the slot (I use AGP, but PCI-express is the new standard), install drivers, and configure it. |
|
Video Cards |
| |

I use it when I have to. I had used Hardware Profiles for different service configurations. That way, you can test out whether a service is required or not, and you can disable it, speeding up the system. I'm not afraid to edit the registry if I have clear instructions and a backup of the registry. |
Windows XP |

My operating system of choice. I compile and install programs. I've recompiled the kernel after customizing it to my needs. I can use data-redirection through BASH. I've learned that you should always look for instructions tucked away in text files. I think that more homes and businesses should switch to Linux. |
|
Linux |
| |
Other |
| |
I've used Nero to burn audio and data CDs, generally it works best to make an image and burn DAO I now can also use cdrecord from the command line. |

If the Internet doesn't work, I reset my router, have dealt with Ports and have used the DMZ. I've learned to change between static and dynamic IP address assignment in order to alternatively connect through a router or connect two computers via a crossover cable. |

| I used AntiVir when I used Windows. Since moving to Linux, I haven't had to install any security-related software. |
|
|
