NSU Chapter 506

Second Annual

Young Artist’s Competition

Philosophy:                  The purpose of this contest is to offer the finest high school

(Grades 9-12) instrumentalists in the state of South Dakota an

adjudicated performance venue that is exclusively their own.

Eligibility:                      Instrumentalists attending a South Dakota high School grades 9-12

No past first place winner may enter the competition on the same

                                        instrument.

Entry fee:                      $25.00, non refundable. Checks made payable to NSU MENC

Awards:                        Three cash awards, $400.00, $200.00 and $100.00 to the top three

contestants.  In addition, the opportunity may be extended to the

top award winner to perform his/her movement of a concerto with

the Aberdeen University/Civic Orchestra or the NSU Symphonic

Band, awarded at the discretion of the NSU ensemble directors.

Benefits:                       Each contestant will be adjudicated. Contestants advancing to the

final round will perform publicly in Berggren Recital Hall and be

and be further adjudicated.  This is an excellent performing and

educational opportunity for any South Dakota high school musician

seriously considering music as a profession.

Contest:

The competition will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2008.

Contestants will be adjudicated by music professionals,

          including NSU faculty.

1st round           During the 1st round, held in the morning, the adjudicators will

be screened from view.  Upon entering the competition venue, a

contestant will be offered a two minute ‘warm-up’ period.

Contestants may NOT play portions of their concerto. Each

contestant will be then allowed 8 minutes time to perform.

Contestants may make cuts in accompanying piano sections to fit

                                      the 8 minute time period.

No audience will be allowed during this round of competition.

2nd round          The 2nd round will be in the form of a formal public recital.

Contestants who advance to this round will perform the movement

or part of their work IN ITS ENTIRETY.  Necessary time will

be allowed. The judges will be in the audience and will not be

                                      screened.

The final recital is open to the public, and families are

                                      encouraged to attend.

Repertoire:                   One movement of a concerto of standard instrumental repertoire.

accompanists are available for a fee.
