History

Northern State University has been a part of the Aberdeen community since 1902. In 1947, the school published the first edition of Northern Lights. This was a collection of poems and short stories written by Northern Students. This first edition was sponsored by XI Gamma Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta. The editors dedicated the publication to the returning veterans. The journal was published annually as Northern Lights until 1988, when the title was changed to Shelterbelt. In 2002, funding for Shelterbelt was cut and the English Club began sponsoring the journal. Northern Lights/Shelterbelt has always been the premiere student publication on campus containing all original works. To keep the spirit alive and bring the publication into the 21st Century, the journal will be called Northern Lights and will be published online.
